Meet the Staff - Joseph Musick, Visual Designer
The following is another installment in our "Meet the Staff" blog series intended to introduce you to the instructors and designers involved in our first touring season of Utah's Drum & Bugle Corps. Today, we are excited to highlight our incredible visual designer - Joseph Musick.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Arvada, Colorado and currently live in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Tell us about your education background and drum corps experience.
I received my Bachelors of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder where I studied with Dana Biggs, Matthew Roeder, Terry Sawchuk and Allan McMurray. During my time at CU, I served as drum major for the Golden Buffalo Marching Band for three years, designed drill for the band, and ran rehearsals with the Golden Buffalo Marching Band.
Drum corps has been an active part of my life for more than a decade. I was a marching member of the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps in 2002, the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps in 2004, and finished my marching career with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps from 2005-2007. My instructional career with drum corps started with the Spirit Drum & Bugle Corps where I was on staff for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. I was then fortunate to join the instructional staff of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010 and was on staff through the 2013 season. During the 2013 season I served the Cavaliers as Brass Caption Head.
In all of the shows you have been involved in as a performer and instructor, which was your favorite and why?
My favorite show as a performer was the 2005 Santa Clara Vanguards production of Russia, Revolution Evolution. The corps had a truly amazing finals performance after a pretty rocky competitive season. The drum corps performed with passion and emotion and really had some SCV magic that evening.
How did you get hooked on the activity?
When I was a freshmen in high school The 2000 Santa Clara Vanguard stayed at our school. While I was rehearsing with the high school brass the SCV hornline played their version of Adagio for Strings for us. I was amazed at the power and sound that a world class hornline could produce . From then on I was hooked on DCI.
What should students and fans expect from the visual package from The Battalion in 2016?
The members and fans of The Battalion should expect a challenging and coordinated program. I am really looking forward to beginning work on the 2016 production for The Battalion.
